Who Are Natural Matts?
Who Are Natural Matts?
Quite simply, Natural Matts is run by two brothers – Steve Day and his brother. Steve takes care of the design and production of the beds and mattresses, while his brother personally delivers them across the UK. That’s it. No frills. No over-complication.
In a world where retail and the internet are often dominated by glitz, glamour, flashy promotions, and endless waffle, Steve and his team keep things refreshingly straightforward: quality products, low direct pricing, and quick delivery.
Over 40 Years of Experience
Steve has been in the furniture business for more than four decades, with his brother always at his side. Throughout that time, their guiding principles have never changed – cut out the unnecessary hype, avoid inflated costs, and provide customers with premium quality at the right price.
The Early Days
The story begins in 1987, when Steve entered the furniture industry in South Wales and opened The Pine Warehouse in Cardiff. It quickly became the largest retail operation of pine furniture, beds, and mattresses in South Wales.
At the time, leading pine furniture brands like Ducal and Lovelace dominated the market with high price tags. Steve and his brother broke the mould. Instead of relying on expensive brand names, they designed and produced their own higher-quality products, kept overheads low, and offered prices up to 68% lower – while still delivering quickly.
The result? Customers travelled from all over the UK to buy from The Pine Warehouse. The business thrived for 25 years, before Steve sold it and set his sights on a new adventure.
The Internet Era
As the internet era emerged – back in the days of Freeserve (long before Google ruled the web) – Steve brought his products online. The move was a huge success, with business booming more than ever.
But success drew the attention of high street retailers, who felt threatened. They combined forces to pressure manufacturers into cutting off supply. Even Lord Alan Sugar (then Sir Alan) publicly called it a “travesty” in his Daily Mirror column A Spoonful of Sugar, pointing out it was in breach of DTI regulations.
Although technically still supplied, manufacturers used a loophole: slowing delivery times. What should have taken 7 days was deliberately dragged out to 6 weeks. That went against everything Steve stood for – quality, fair pricing, and prompt delivery.
Moving Into Manufacturing
Instead of giving up, Steve took control. He moved into manufacturing, first working with Devonshire Pine & Oak to produce and offer affordable oak furniture. Ironically, the very retailers who had once complained about him soon snapped up his products in multi-million pound volumes yearly!
Steve was even contracted by Oak Furniture Land, helping them rise to dominate the UK market. During this time, separately he also designed and produced premium mattresses, which were and are sold and delivered across the world.
A Natural Love – Mattress Making
Despite his success with cabinet and oak furniture (much of which was manufactured overseas), Steve’s true passion always lay in mattress making. For him, British-made beds and mattresses have always been the finest in the world.
That passion is what drives Natural Matts today. The business stays true to Steve’s original ethos – delivering premium quality British-made mattresses and beds at the lowest possible direct prices, with quick delivery.
The Natural Matts Promise
At its heart, Natural Matts is about keeping things simple. Steve designs and produces beds and mattresses to the highest standards. Shaun delivers them straight to your door. Together, they provide what so many retailers overcomplicate: great products, great prices, and great service – without the nonsense.
Now Let’s Talk Mattresses
We’ve covered the history – but let’s get down to the real nuts and bolts: mattresses.
Steve Day, co-founder of Natural Matts, keeps it refreshingly simple:
“It’s actually very simple. Natural mattresses, produced from 100% natural products, are simply the best. They’re the most comfortable, they offer the finest support, and with their natural filling products, they self-regulate temperature – just like a sheep on a mountain! And of course, they’re eco-friendly. What more could you possibly want to sleep on?”
Cutting Through the Industry Hype
The mattress industry, as Steve explains, often tries to dazzle customers with so-called “scientific advances.” But much of it is marketing spin:
-
Memory Foam: “It attracts heat. It’s cheap – that’s why it’s used!” Steve points out.
-
Cooling Gel Additions: “Do you really want to sleep on gel? It doesn’t work anyway.”
-
Synthetic Fillings: Many mattresses are bulked out with polyester and other man-made fibres. They may be cheaper for manufacturers, but they don’t breathe, they trap heat, and they fail to wick away body moisture.
The result? A mattress that may look the part on a showroom floor, but delivers far less comfort and support over time.
Why Natural Mattresses Are Different
Natural mattresses use fillings such as wool, cashmere, and silk – materials that breathe, regulate temperature, and wick away moisture. These are products of nature that work in harmony with the body, ensuring a cooler, more comfortable night’s sleep.
“Why wouldn’t anyone want to sleep on a 100% natural mattress?” Steve asks.
The answer, of course, usually comes down to one thing: price.
Quality vs. Cost
While natural mattresses cost more to produce, they deliver better comfort, longer durability, and far superior health and environmental benefits compared to their synthetic counterparts. Steve’s mission with Natural Matts is to strip away the unnecessary costs.
How Do We Cut the Cost So You Can Benefit from a 100% Natural Mattress?
Steve puts it plainly:
“Once again, by keeping it simple. I have the production lines to manufacture 100% natural mattresses and beds. Shaun is ready to deliver them. We have the website. That’s all we need.”
The truth is, most of the extra cost in the mattress industry comes from overheads. Retail parks and high street stores need to cover sky-high rents, glossy showrooms, large staffing teams, and heavy marketing campaigns. To cover these expenses, they add big margins – and the customer ends up footing the bill.
At Natural Matts, those unnecessary layers are stripped away. There’s no retail park, no showroom costs, no inflated mark-ups. Instead, you buy direct from the source – from Steve and Shaun at Natural Matts.
Simple: You buy from Steve, he's live online, he's live on the phone,( 0117 4271243) he's live on email 8 AM -10 PM, 7 days a week, ready to assist, whilst the team is ready to deliver in 7-10 days to mainland UK.
The result? You get the finest 100% natural mattresses and beds at a price that’s fair, honest, and as low as possible, without ever compromising on quality. -Simple!
So, What’s the Best Mattress Money Can Buy Directly?
Steve has a clear answer:
“Quite simply – The Ultimate Mattress. And here’s why!”
Designed for Total Perfection
The Ultimate Mattress was created with one goal in mind: to offer customers everything in one bed. It’s built to deliver total comfort, total support, and total luxury.
At its core, the mattress boasts an incredible 10,000 individual pocket springs – far above the industry average – ensuring maximum body support and pressure relief. But the real magic comes in what surrounds those springs: the layers of 100% natural fillings.
Think of the Ultimate Mattress as the finest, hand-crafted “sandwich” – every layer carefully chosen for comfort, performance, and luxury.
Alpaca Wool – The Rarest and Finest Fibre
The star ingredient is British Alpaca Wool – one of the softest and most luxurious fibres used in high-end mattress making. It’s rare, sustainable, and prized for its natural ability to regulate temperature.
Why Alpaca?
-
Super soft & smooth: Its fibres have fewer scales than sheep’s wool, making it softer to the touch.
-
Temperature regulating: Alpacas evolved in the harsh climates of South America, where freezing nights and scorching days are the norm. Their wool keeps them cool in heat and warm in cold – perfect for regulating body temperature in bed.
-
Eco-friendly & ethical: The wool is a natural byproduct of annual shearing. In the UK, only a handful of small, independent alpaca farmers produce it, ensuring it’s both rare and responsibly sourced.
You won’t find British Alpaca in a typical high-street mattress. It’s too rare, too premium, and too valuable for mass-market retailers. But in the Ultimate Mattress, it’s a key layer – offering breathability, moisture control, and incredible comfort.
A Symphony of Natural Luxury
The Alpaca layer is only the beginning. The Ultimate Mattress also includes the finest Yorkshire Lamb’s Wool and Cashmere, both renowned for their softness, durability, and natural ability to wick away moisture.
The mattress is also hand-tufted for perfection.
Together, these fillings create a bed that adapts to the sleeper – warm in winter, cool in summer, and supremely comfortable all year round.
Why It’s Called “The Ultimate”
The combination of 10,000 pocket springs and the rarest, most luxurious natural fillings results in a mattress that’s unmatched in support, breathability, and comfort.
As Steve says:
“We designed the Ultimate Mattress to be exactly that – the very best money can buy, without compromise. Natural, British, luxurious – and delivered directly to you. - and the best bit in a double size it's only £995! - it's a mattress that would set you back £2-3,000 on the retail parks!'
